Helmet

18 x 12 x 10 inches, limestone

I love working in Limestone. It has no surprises as does marble and alabaster.

It is awful to be carving a face and find a vein of color running across the nose. Limestone cuts with uniform resistance. However, you most likely will find small fossils embedded in it. I've seen scorpion-like remains and plant imprints from eons ago. Limestone connects the sculptor with antiquity. The stone is versatile. It takes a high glossy polish or can be left unpolished with a wide range of effects.

Girl with Helmet is both simple form and portraiture. Perhaps she sees something beyond the here and now. She is fearless. She is young and hoperul, ready to face life with open eyes and an open mind.
