Tall Male Torso

45 x 16 x 14 inches, tiger eye

I have done many female torsos. It is surprising how much information you have just living with your own body. But the male figure? I really had to study it. The beauty of the male torso has been exemplified by the ancient Greeks and Romans. There are certain areas that fascinate me, especially that strong muscle that creates a concavity in the side of the butt. I united stone with steel to show strength. The male body is about hardness, the female body is about softness and curves.

I must also comment on the stone. This piece of Tiger Eye was long and exquisitely marked - dark silver gray with golden ochre highlights. It is the same stone used to make beautiful jewelry. Because the piece had little depth I was unable to do a fully rounded figure. But I was so successful with White Shadow that I pushed it, so to speak, as far as I could and worked on it as though it were bas-relief fortified with steel to give it physical and visual strength. The back is raw stone, which in itself is enduring and powerful.

Sculpture should be looked at from all sides. As one views this sculpture the eye moves from lustrous polished anatomy to the rough stone and steel - all the information necessary to experience the complete story of the male torso.
